If you’re a parent looking for a fun, stress-free night out, Emma at the Rose Theatre is exactly what you need. I can’t remember the last time I laughed so much (and so loudly!) in one evening. The humour is easy, silly, and feel-good, the perfect escape after a long day of parenting.
A Fresh Take on a Jane Austen Classic
This new adaptation, created by Ava Pickett and directed by Christopher Haydon, brings a modern, playful energy to Jane Austen’s timeless story. The production cleverly mixes witty dialogue with lively, contemporary touches (even a few dance-floor moments) making it feel fresh while keeping the heart of the original tale.
Standout Performances
Amelia Kenworthy is fantastic as Emma Woodhouse, capturing her charm, confidence, and mischievousness perfectly. But it was Nigel Lindsay as the hilarious Mr. Woodhouse who had me in stitches throughout the evening. Every line, every expression was comedy gold. The rest of the cast kept the energy high, ensuring laughter and fun from start to finish.
Why Parents Will Love It
Emma has just returned home from Oxford, and true to form, spends her time meddling in the lives of her friends, with predictably chaotic results. Her father’s quirky antics, a friend’s dating disasters, and George Knightley’s witty commentary create a mix of humour, romance, and heartwarming moments.
For parents, this play is the ultimate escape: a light, feel-good evening where you can sit back, relax, and laugh without overthinking anything. Whether it’s a mum’s night out or a date night, it’s the perfect pick-me-up.
