Having a baby is always magical, but I won’t lie, by the fourth time around you know what’s truly essential… and what’s just noise. After three little ones (and another joining us this summer!), I’ve definitely narrowed it down to the baby items that actually get used, loved, and last the distance.
Whether you’re a first-time mum or adding to your growing crew, here are some of my go-to newborn faves that have stood the test of time, and a few new bits I’m excited to add this time around!
1. A First Outfit from MORI – Because Traditions Matter
Each of my babies has come home from the hospital in something from MORI, and it’s become a bit of a sweet little tradition in our family. Their baby clothes are unbelievably soft, gentle on newborn skin, and honestly, they hold up through wash after wash (and baby after baby!). I always wait for their sales, they run them fairly often, and grab a few essentials like their zip-up sleepsuits or long-sleeved onesies. Perfect for those first cuddles and sleepy snuggles.
2. The Tried and Tested Basics I Swear By
There are a million “must-have” lists out there, but when it comes to the basics, I’ve learned to keep it simple:
• Sudocrem: I’ve tried the fancy balms, the organic options, and everything in between, but nothing beats Sudocrem for keeping nappy rash at bay. It’s my number one nappy bag essential.
• NoseFrida Snot Sucker: Sounds gross, but trust me, this little tool is a lifesaver when your newborn gets stuffy. Worth every penny.
• John Lewis Organic Cotton Vests: These are my go-to for layering under onesies. They’re soft, durable, and they’ve lasted through all my kids. I always stock up in the newborn and 0–3 sizes!
3. A Few Fresh Finds to Celebrate This Baby
Even though I have most of the big-ticket items already, I love treating myself to a few fresh bits for each baby. This time, since I’m having a summer bub, I’ve got my eye on:
• Mushie Muslin Swaddle Blanket: Lightweight, breathable, and just so lovely for warmer days. Most of mine from previous babies are well-used (read: stained beyond saving), so a new one is top of the list!
•Mama Shack Nappy Caddy: Since having my third baby, we’ve gone through some big renovations, and for the first time, I can finally be a bit more organised! I’m planning to have a nappy caddy both upstairs and downstairs this time around, and Mama Shack’s version is not only super practical but also so lovely to look at. I love the soft, neutral colour options and how it blends into our home while keeping everything I need right at my fingertips (especially for those middle-of-the-night changes!).
Final Thoughts
The fourth time around, I’ve realised the stuff doesn’t matter nearly as much as the moments. But having a few reliable essentials, things that work, that last, and that feel a bit special, can make those early newborn days a little smoother and a lot sweeter.
If you’re preparing for your own little one, or just curious what other mums are using, hopefully this helps take the guesswork out of what you actually need. 💛
Let me know what your favourite newborn item is, I’m always up for adding something new to my list!
